Dr. Shannon Harmon serves as the Instructional Support Specialist at the Center for Innovation in Teaching Excellence (CITE) at Mississippi State University. Since joining MSU in June 2025, she has partnered with faculty across disciplines to design engaging, evidence-based learning experiences and to advance student success. She leads several of the center's signature initiatives, including new faculty onboarding, Preparing Future Faculty, and expanded programming in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and mentoring. Dr. Harmon has also developed a growing portfolio of AI initiatives that help instructors thoughtfully integrate emerging technologies into their teaching.
Dr. Harmon hosts InCITEful Teaching, a faculty-focused podcast that highlights innovative teaching practices, showcases faculty expertise, and explores emerging topics such as artificial intelligence in higher education. Through these conversations, she amplifies the work of instructors across the university and fosters a culture of shared learning and curiosity.
Prior to joining MSU, Dr. Harmon was a tenured Associate Professor of Elementary Education at Middle Tennessee State University, where she specialized in curriculum and instruction, clinical practice, and competency-based education. Her work centered on preparing teacher candidates through immersive, field-based experiences and building strong school–university partnerships. An award-winning educator, she received the MTSU Outstanding Teaching Award and the College of Education Innovation in Teaching Award, and she served as a Faculty Fellow for the Institute for Competency-Based Teacher Education, contributing to statewide initiatives that strengthen the teacher talent pipeline.
Dr. Harmon earned her B.A. in Communications from Mississippi State University and her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and Ed.D. in Elementary Education from the University of Mississippi. Her scholarly interests focus on artificial intelligence in higher education, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and evidence-based faculty development, reflecting her commitment to helping instructors adapt to a rapidly changing teaching landscape. She is passionate about supporting faculty through collaboration, practical strategies, and reflective practice to enhance teaching and learning in higher education.
